Richard
A. Meserve (11 min.) is President of the Carnegie
Institution of Washington and former Chairman of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory
Commission. He has a Ph.D. in applied physics and a law degree. For many years
he was a partner with Covington & Burling LLP, and now serves as Senior Of
Counsel, devoting his legal practice to technical issues arising at the
intersection of science, law, and public policy. He is currently Chairman of
the International Nuclear Safety Group of the International Atomic Energy
Agency and of the Nuclear and Radiation Studies Board of the National Academy
of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering. He is a member of the
National Academy of Engineering and of the American Philosophical Society, and
a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences, where he serves as a
member of its Council and Trust. |

Ralph
J. Cicerone (12 min.) is President of the National Academy
of Sciences. Former Chancellor of the University of California at Irvine, he is
an atmospheric scientist whose research in atmospheric chemistry and climate
change has shaped science and environmental policy both nationally and
internationally and contributed to the understanding of greenhouse gases and
ozone depletion. The 1999 Laureate of the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement
in Science, he also received the American Geophysical Union’s James B.
Macelwane Award and Roger Revelle Medal for outstanding contributions to
geophysics. In 2004 the World Cultural Council honored him with the Albert
Einstein World Award in Science. He is a member of the National Academy of
Sciences and the American Philosophical Society and a Fellow of the American
Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Charles
O. Holliday, Jr. (10 min.) is Chairman of the Board and
Chief Executive Officer of DuPont. Under his direction, DuPont established its
mission to achieve sustainable growth: increasing shareholder and societal
value while decreasing the company’s environmental footprint. Past Chairman of
the World Business Council for Sustainable Development, he is Chair of the
Board of Directors of Catalyst and Chair of the U.S. Council on
Competitiveness. He is a co-author of Walking the Talk: The Business Case for
Sustainable Development. He is a member of the National Academy of
Engineering. |

Jane
Lubchenco (25 min.) is Wayne and Gladys Valley Professor
of Marine Biology and Distinguished Professor of Zoology at Oregon State
University. She is an environmental scientist and marine ecologist, whose
research and teaching focus on interactions between humans and the environment:
biodiversity, climate change, sustainability science, marine reserves, coastal
marine ecosystems, and the state of the oceans. She has received numerous
awards, including a MacArthur Fellowship, a Pew Fellowship, the Heinz Award in
the Environment, the Environmental Law Institute Award, and the American
Association for the Advancement of Science’s Award for Public Understanding of
Science and Technology. A member of the National Academy of Sciences and the
American Philosophical Society, she is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts
& Sciences. |
