At the fall Stated Meeting of the Midwest Center Lee Bollinger,
president of the University of Michigan, led a panel discussion on "Free Speech
at the End of the Century." An authority on the First Amendment and mass media
law, Bollinger is a former professor of law and dean of the University of
Michigan Law School and, most recently, provost of Dartmouth College. He is the
author of Images of a Free Press and The Tolerant Society: Freedom of
Speech and Extremist Speech in America.
The meeting was held at the Rackham Center on the campus of the
University of Michigan on October 31. It opened with an induction ceremony for
new Fellows from the Midwest region. Prior to the meeting Fellows and guests
attended a special tour of the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Library in Ann
Arbor.
