Introduction & Moderator:		Emilio Bizzi (4 min.) is Institute Professor and Investigator at the McGovern Institute at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he has been amember of the faculty since 1969. He is a neuroscientist whose research focuses on movement control and the neural substrate for motor learning. He is a Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei, and a member of the Harvard University Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a recipient of the President of Italy’s Gold Medal for Scientific Contributions. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1980 and served as the 44th President of the Academy.
Speakers:		Edward Scolnick (21 min.) is Director of the Psychiatric Disease Program and the Stanley Center for Psychiatric Research at the Broad Institute and a senior associate member. He works closely with principal investigator Pamela Sklar in identifying risk genes for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. From 1982 to 2003, he served as President of Merck Research Laboratories; Executive Vice President for Science and Technology at Merck & Company, Inc; Executive Director and Vice President in the Department of Virus and Cell Biology and Senior Vice President for Basic Research at Merck Research Laboratories. Prior to joining Merck, he worked at the National Cancer Institute and the National Heart Institute. He has served on the Board of Directors of Merck & Co., Inc., the Board of Councillors for the National Institute of Mental Health, and the FDA Science Board. Currently he is a consultant for Clarus Ventures and serves on the board of directors for Millipore Corporation. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the Institute of Medicine. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 1993.
		Robert Desimone (26 min.) is Director of the McGovern Institute for Brain Research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Doris and Don Berkey Professor in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences. His research focuses on the neural bases of attention and executive control, which are frequently abnormal in major mental diseases. Prior to joining the McGovern Institute in 2004, he was director of the Intramural Research Program at the National Institutes of Mental Health, the largest mental health research center in the world. His articles have appeared frequently in Science, Nature, Neuron, and PNAS, among other scientific journals. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of numerous awards, including the Troland Prize of the National Academy of Sciences and the Golden Brain Award of the Minerva Foundation. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences in 2001.
