Academy President James O. Freedman Delivers Jefferson Memorial Lecture at
University of California, Berkeley
American Academy President James O. Freedman delivered the
Jefferson Memorial Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley on April
17, 2001. Freedman, President Emeritus of Dartmouth College and the University
of Iowa, discussed "Liberal Education and Democracy." The author of several
volumes, his most recent book, Idealism and Liberal Education, is an
examination of the content and character of liberal education.
Part of Berkeley's Graduate Council Lectures program, the Jefferson
Memorial Series was established in 1944, under the will of Elizabeth Bonestell,
for the study and promotion of the basic principles of American Democracy. In
recent years, speakers have included Academy Fellows Stanley Katz (Princeton
University), Akira Iriye (Harvard University), Abner Mikva (University of
Chicago), and Franklin H. T. Rhodes (Cornell University).
