Academy President James O. Freedman Delivers Jefferson Memorial Lecture at University of California, Berkeley

American Academy President James O. Freedman delivered the Jefferson Memorial Lecture at the University of California, Berkeley on April 17, 2001. Freedman, President Emeritus of Dartmouth College and the University of Iowa, discussed "Liberal Education and Democracy." The author of several volumes, his most recent book, Idealism and Liberal Education, is an examination of the content and character of liberal education.

Part of Berkeley's Graduate Council Lectures program, the Jefferson Memorial Series was established in 1944, under the will of Elizabeth Bonestell, for the study and promotion of the basic principles of American Democracy. In recent years, speakers have included Academy Fellows Stanley Katz (Princeton University), Akira Iriye (Harvard University), Abner Mikva (University of Chicago), and Franklin H. T. Rhodes (Cornell University).
