Academy Names Dr. James Miller as New Editor of Dædalus
September 15, 2000The American Academy of Arts and Sciences
announced today that author and critic Dr. James Miller has been named
the new editor of the organization's journal,
Dædalus. Dr. Miller is the third editor in the 42-year
history of the interdisciplinary quarterly. He replaces Stephen R. Graubard,
who had edited the Academy's flagship publication since 1961.
"Jim Miller brings a wide range of intellectual interests and a
long list of accomplishments to his new role at Daedalus," said Academy
President James O. Freedman. "We look forward to working with him to continue Dædalus'
tradition of publishing on emerging topics of concern to the intellectual and
policymaking communities." Academy Chief Executive Officer Leslie Berlowitz
added, "Dr. Miller's intellectual versatility makes him a strong editor for a
journal that delivers cutting-edge scholarship to a general, educated audience"
Dr. Miller is professor of political science and director of
liberal studies at the New School for Social Research. He is also the author of
five well-received books on topics ranging from Rock and Roll to Jean Jacques
Rousseau. Two of his books, Democracy is in the Streets: From Port Huron to the
Siege of Chicago and The Passion of Michel Foucault, were
National Book Critics Circle finalists and another won the prestigious Ralph J.
Gleason Music Book Award. Dr. Miller has also published a wide range of
scholarly articles along with arts and book reviews in the popular press. For
nine years he served as an editor and book and music critic at Newsweek.
In 1997, Dr. Miller was named a Guggenheim Fellow. Since receiving his Ph.D. in
1975, he has also taught at the University of Texas, Boston University, Harvard
University, and Brown University.
Dr. Miller welcomes the challenge of editing an interdisciplinary journal, even
in the face of intensifying forces of cultural fragmentation. "Dædalus
will have to redouble its effort to find writers who can speak across
disciplines to help rebuild a common culture," he explained. "Since its
inception, Dædalus has been a singular experiment in academic
publishing, an interdisciplinary gathering of scholars and thinkers normally
sequestered within their specialties."
Dædalus has been the nation's most successful
multidisciplinary intellectual journal of the past half-century. More than half
of the journal's issues have been republished as books by independent and
university presses. Pathbreaking editions have altered public debate about arms
control, race relations, education and Eastern Europe.
