Two Academy Foreign Honorary Members Share Wolf Prize in Mathematics

January 8, 2001—Two Foreign Honorary Members of the American Academy, Vladimir I. Arnold (University of Paris Dauphine) and Saharon Shelah (Hebrew University in Israel) will share the 2001 Wolf Foundation prize in mathematics. They were recognized for their "deep and influential work in a multitude of areas ... including dynamical systems, differential equations and singularity theory" and for their "contributions to mathematical logic and set theory," respectively, according to the foundation.

The Wolf Foundation was established in 1976 by Dr. Ricardo Wolf (1887-1981), inventor, diplomat, and philanthropist, and his wife, Francisca Subirana-Wolf (1900-1981), "to promote science and art for the benefit of mankind." Based in Israel, the Wolf Foundation awards five science prizes each year, in agriculture, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, and physics, and also in the arts. Each award carries a $100,000 prize.
