The Western Center - Irvine, California

Convened by Jack W. Peltason, Cochair of the Western Center and Vice President of the Academy, the 1836th Stated Meeting took place last July in Los Angeles. Gordon Davidson, producer/director of the Performing Arts Center of Los Angeles County, made arrangements for Academy members and guests to attend a matinee performance of Robert Glaudini's The Poison Tree at the Mark Taper Forum.

Following the performance, members went to the Salvatori Room of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion for dinner and the Stated Meeting, at which Gordon Davidson talked about his own experiences in the dramatic arts. He invited his colleagues Robert Egan, producing director of the Mark Taper Forum, and playwright Robert Glaudini to participate in an informal dialogue with the Fellows about the play and the many aspects of theater production.

The Midwest Center - Chicago, Illinois

The Academy's 1838th Stated Meeting featured Fellow Martha Nussbaum delivering a talk on the topic "Toward Global Justice." Nussbaum is the Ernst Freund Distinguished Service Professor of Law and Ethics at the University of Chicago where she holds joint appointments in the Law School, the Divinity School, and the Department of Philosophy. Her most recent book is Women and Human Development: The Capabilities Approach, published last April.

The event was held on October 28, 2000 at the Chicago Cultural Center, a landmark building that is home to the world's largest Tiffany dome. Participants were given a private viewing of the Museum of Broadcast Communications at the Cultural Center. The meeting, presided over by Roger Myerson, Chair of the Academy's Midwest Center, included a regional induction ceremony for newly elected members from the Midwest.
