The Academy is coming off a record year for foundation support of projects and other activities. Selected grants received by program areas include:

Science, Security and International Cooperation

Humanities and Culture

This initiative has received more than $800,000 from a wide range of sources.
PIs: Denis Donoghue, New York University; Steven Marcus, Columbia University; Richard Franke, John Nuveen Company; and Leslie Berlowitz, American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

  • William R. Hewlett Revocable Trust—$500,000.
  • Walter Hewlett—$218,117.
  • Sara Lee Corporation—$60,000.
  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation—$37,000.
  • Madison Charitable Fund—$25,000.

Children, Higher Education and Social Policy

  • Golden Family Foundation and Paul Zuckerman
    $75,000 for the project on "Universal Basic and Secondary Education."
    PIs: Joel Cohen, Rockefeller University, and David Bloom, Harvard University

  • The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation
    $160,000 over three years for "The Educational Impact of Changing Student Demographics in Colleges and Universities," under the Initiatives for Children program.
    PI: Richard Light, Harvard University

  • The Spencer Foundation
    $25,000 for the "Center for Evaluation" at Initiatives for Children.
    PI: Frederick Mosteller, Harvard University

  • William T. Grant
    $10,000 to the "Center for Evaluation" to support a Conference on Evaluation.
    PI: Frederick Mosteller

  • Esther and Joseph Klingenstein Fund
    $25,000 in operating support to the Initiatives for Children.
    PI: Howard Hiatt, Brigham and Women's Hospital

  • Anonymous
    $100,000 in operating support for the Initiatives for Children.
    PI: Howard Hiatt, Brigham and Women's Hospital

Dædalus

Germeshausan Foundation, Blandin Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, and German Marshall Fund—gifts of varying amounts to Dædalus to support issues, respectively, on ecology and religion, Minnesota, South Africa, and social welfare.
PI: Stephen R. Graubard, Brown University.

  • Anonymous
    $150,000 for review and development of Academy publications.
    PI: Leslie Berlowitz

  • Elizabeth & Stephen Bechtel Jr. Foundation
    $75,000 to support strategic planning.
