New Daedalus Editor Named

James Miller has been named the new editor of the Academy's journal, Daedalus. Just the third person to hold that post in the 42-year history of the interdisciplinary quarterly, he follows Fellow Stephen R. Graubard, who had edited the Academy's flagship publication since 1961.

"Jim Miller brings a wide range of intellectual interests to his new role at Daedalus," said American Academy President, James O. Freedman. "We look forward to working with him to continue Daedalus' tradition of publishing on emerging topics of concern to the intellectual and policymaking communities." Miller is Professor of Political Science and Director of Liberal Studies at the New School for Social Research. He is also the author of five books, including two that were National Book Critics Circle finalists.

A search committee headed by Steven Marcus (Columbia University), the Editor of the Academy, and including Bill Kovach (Committee of Concerned Journalists), Sandra Scarr (Holualoa, HI), Robert Silvers (New York Review of Books), Neil J. Smelser (Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences), Patricia Meyer Spacks (University of Virginia), James O. Freedman (President, ex officio), and Leslie Berlowitz (Executive Officer, ex officio) identified Miller for the post.

Miller welcomes the challenge of editing an interdisciplinary journal, even in the face of intensifying forces of cultural fragmentation. "Daedalus will have to redouble its effort to find writers who can speak across disciplines to help rebuild a common culture," he explained.
