John Steinbruner New Co-Chair of Committee on International Security Studies
In April, the Committee on International
Security Studies (CISS) welcomed John Steinbruner as its new cochair.
Steinbruner, who directed Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution
for 18 years, is Professor of Public Policy at the University of Maryland. An
internationally recognized expert on defense issues, he brings to CISS an
interest in how globalization of economic activity, advances in information
technology, population growth, and the uneven distribution of wealth affect the
prospects for peace and security.
Under the leadership of Steinbruner and cochair Carl Kaysen (MIT),
CISS plans and sponsors interdisciplinary studies on problems that affect the
security of states and societies around the world. Projects focus on emerging
issues with global implications and explore cooperative, multilateral means of
ensuring peace and security.
