Chancellor Gary Stephen May is highly regarded for leadership in increasing participation of underrepresented students and faculty in STEM. As professor and dean, he championed hands-on engineering experiences and entrepreneurship education for undergraduates, and international study and professional collaborations for faculty. Dr. May is a globally recognized pioneer in computer integrated manufacturing of integrated circuits. His work to apply neural nets in semiconductor manufacturing signified his early vision of, and helped lay the groundwork for, Artificial Intelligence. His textbook with Simon Sze, Fundamentals of Semiconductor Manufacturing (2003), is required reading in electrical engineering courses around the country.
