Copyright Law of the United States of America

The Copyright Law of the United States of America is incorporated in Title 17 of the United States Code. The text contained herein includes the Act for the General Revision of the Copyright Law, being Chapters 1 through 8 of Title 17 of the United States Code, together with Transitional and Supplementary Provisions, enacted as Public Law 94-553, 90 Stat. 2541, on October 19, 1976. Also incorporated herein and listed below in chronological order of their enactment are subsequent amendments to the said General Revision of the Copyright Law as embodied in Title 17 of the United States Code.

Note:

Title 17 of the United States Code was also amended by the Act of November 8, 1984, Pub. L. 98-620, 98 Stat. 3347, 3356, which added to Title 17 Chapter 9 thereof, entitled "Protection of Semiconductor Chip Products." The provisions of Chapter 9 are not a part of the Copyright Law. The amendatory Act states that it may be cited as the "Semiconductor Chip Protection Act of 1984." Copies may be obtained free of charge from the Copyright Office.

Actions of the 105th Congress

P.L. 105-298 (S. 505) -- Copyright Term Extension and Music Licensing -- was passed by the House and Senate on 10/7/98 and was signed by the President on 10/27/98.

P.L. 105-304 (H.R. 2281)-- the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 -- was passed by the Senate on 10/8/98, passed by the House on 10/12/98, and signed by the President on 10/28/98.
