Book Launch: The Privileged Poor
On February 13, 2019, the Academy celebrated the launch of Anthony Jack’s first book, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students.
Jack is a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows, an assistant professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a Shutzer Assistant Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study. His research and writing, as well as biographical experiences as a first-generation college student, have been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The National Review, NPR and other outlets. His scholarship appears in the Du Bois Review, Sociological Forum, and Sociology of Education and has earned awards from the American Sociological Association, Eastern Sociological Society, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
Bridget Terry Long and Danielle Allen joined us for this event exploring the experiences of lower-income undergraduates at the country’s top colleges and how campus cultures and policies can better support these students.
