Widely published book and magazine writer, former Washington correspondent for The New Yorker, and dean (2003-2013) of the Columbia School of Journalism, where he revised the curriculum and became a leader in journalism education. Career includes positions at The Washington Monthly, as an associate editor and then managing editor; at Texas Monthly, as an associate editor and then executive editor; at The Washington Post, as a member of the national staff; and at The Atlantic Monthly, as national correspondent. Books include the widely discussed The Big Test: The Secret History of the American Meritocracy (1999), which led to critical reappraisal of the SAT.
