Are Animals Natural?

APR
13
Thursday, April 13, 2017
House of the Academy, Cambridge

12:30 PM

Event Format: Lunch and Discussion

Topic Description: What is the difference between animals that are natural and animals that are not?  Do we make the distinction differently now than we have in the past?  What are the consequences, for the animals and for us?  How do we preserve, study and value nature amid the introduction of new genetic techniques, “de-extinction”, and Pleistocene Rewilding? Or, alternatively, what is the best way to conserve biological diversity in these changing times, and when we speak about “conserving,” what is it that we are trying to conserve?

Featuring:

Professor Harriet Ritvo (Massachusetts Institute of Technology)
Professor Jonathan B. Losos
