Welcome: Leslie Cohen Berlowitz is President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She is former Vice President for Academic Advancement at New York University. She served as an advisor to the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Humanities Alliance, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. Berlowitz organized the recently published study ARISE: Advancing Research In Science and Engineering: Investing in Early-Career Scientists and High-Risk, High-Reward Research. She also created the American Academy’s Initiative for Humanities and Culture. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2004. Audio | Video (5 min.)
Moderator: John Sexton is President of New York University, the Benjamin Butler Professor of Law, and Dean Emeritus of the NYU School of Law. He is chair of the American Council on Education, chair of the New York Academy of Sciences, and immediate past chair of the Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities of New York. Sexton has served as chair of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and the Federal Reserve System’s Council of Chairs. He serves on the boards of the Institute of International Education and the National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and a past member of the executive committee of the Association of American Universities. During his tenure as Dean of the Law School, he was President of the Association of American Law Schools. Sexton was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2001. Speakers: Robert M. Berdahl is President of the Association of American Universities. He is the former Chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, where he was a Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy. Berdahl has served as President of the University of Texas at Austin. A historian, he first taught at the University of Massachusetts Boston, then joined the faculty at the University of Oregon, where he became Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. He also served as Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1999. Jared L. Cohon is President of Carnegie Mellon University. A civil engineer, he serves on the Homeland Security Advisory Council, appointed by Presidents Bush and Obama, and he chaired the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board during the Clinton administration. Cohon is chairman of the Association of American Universities. He served as Dean of the School of Forestry and Environmental Studies and Professor of Environmental Systems Analysis at Yale University and was Associate Dean of Engineering and Vice Provost for research at Johns Hopkins University. Ruth J. Simmons is the 18th President of Brown University and a Professor in the University’s Departments of Comparative Literature and Africana Studies. She served in various administrative roles at the University of Southern California, Princeton University, and Spelman College before becoming President of Smith College in 1995. Simmons serves on the board of Texas Instruments and recently was appointed by President Obama as a member of the President’s Commission on White House Fellowships. She was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1997. Audio | Video (15 min.)
