José Cabezón, is the Dalai Lama Professor of Tibetan Buddhism and Cultural Studies and Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He holds one of only three endowed chairs in Tibetan Buddhist Studies in North America. Cabezón is a leading scholar in the field of Buddhist Studies, having published a range of highly significant and influential works over the course of his career, including several translations of important classical texts. Cabezón has written on a wide range of themes in Indian and Tibetan Buddhism: philosophy, history, ritual, and sexuality. His most recent work includes Sexuality in Classical South Asian Buddhism (2017), widely considered the definitive work on the subject, and Sera Monastery (2019), a history of one of Tibet's premier monastic universities.The winner of numerous prestigious grants--including Humboldt, Guggenheim, and ACLS fellowships--in 2020 he served as president of the American Academy of Religion, the first scholar of Buddhism to be so honored in the fifty-five-year history of the organization.
