Roz Chast, a Member of the American Academy since 2013, is a cartoonist. Her earliest cartoons were published in Christopher Street and The Village Voice. In 1978, The New Yorker accepted one of her cartoons–and has since published more than one thousand. She also publishes cartoons in Scientific American, Harvard Business Review, Redbook, and Mother Jones. Her subjects often deal with domestic and family life and reflect a conspiracy of inanimate objects. Her recent books include Going Into Town: A Love Letter to New York (2017), Can’t We Talk About Something More Pleasant?: A Memoir (2014), What I Hate from A to Z (2011), and Theories of Everything: Selected, Collected, and Health-Inspected Cartoons of Roz Chast, 1978–2006 (2008). She also illustrated The Alphabet from A to Y, with Bonus Letter, Z (2007), the children’s book by Steve Martin.

An angel smiles beside a scowling demon. A list of compassionate responses about being the caregiver for elderly parents runs beneath the angel while a list of complaints appears below the demon. The lists include forgiving or resenting her parents for things that happened in her youth; treasuring or growing numb to the time she currently spends with her parents; and welcoming or dreading the idea of her parents living with her.
