Program Description:

SEED for Oklahoma Kids (SEED OK) is the nation’s first statewide Child Development Account initiative. Launched in 2007, the program established state-owned Oklahoma 529 accounts for more than 1,300 randomly selected newborns, each receiving an initial $1,000 deposit. Eligible participants also received additional contributions and savings incentives.

Administered by the Oklahoma State Treasurer’s Office in partnership with Washington University in St. Louis’s Center for Social Development, SEED OK funds may be used for qualified expenses at eligible colleges, universities, and career and technical education programs.

Michael Sherraden, Center for Social Development

“SEED OK’s success helped inspire the U.S. Treasury’s new Trump Accounts initiative, a national early wealth program designed to help children begin building assets at birth.”

Oklahoma is building on that legacy with $12.5 million in state-funded contributions of $250 each to approximately 50,000 eligible children’s federally established Trump Accounts.

Population Served:

The initiative serves participating Oklahoma children born in 2007 and their families. Funds must be used before the beneficiary turns 30.
