West Virginia College Promise

Program Description:  

West Virginia offers a myriad of grants and scholarships to students, created by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission and the West Virginia Community and Technical College System and funded by the State Legislature. One of their most generous scholarships is the Promise Scholarship, which is merit-based and available to any West Virginia high school graduate attending one of the state’s public or independent two- or four-year colleges or universities. The scholarship provides up to $5,500 to be paid towards tuition and other mandatory fees. Students can reapply for the scholarship annually if they continue to meet eligibility requirements. 

Impact:  

The Promise Scholarship provides students in West Virginia with an opportunity to go to college with less concern over affordability. The scholarship not only promotes thriving for young people of the state but also allows for further economic growth and development within the state. Applicants for the scholarship are also strongly encouraged to participate in community service, both in high school and community, ensuring students are actively giving back to their communities.  

Population Served:  

Any graduating high school student in West Virginia who has been a resident for at least one year, completes at least one of half of the credits required for high school graduation through attendance at a public or private high school in the state of West Virginia, achieves at least a 3.0 GPA, and receives a minimum ACT score of 21 or SAT score of 1080, is eligible for the scholarship.
