Aurora University Skills Infusion Program

Program Description: 

Aurora University’s Skill Infusion Program is a one semester long professional development program that consists of three required large-group workshops. Full-time faculty members have the option to participate, and their time is paid. The program aims to help faculty develop coursework that is better-aligned with the needs of employers. In their groups, faculty review course syllabi, map course outcomes, and work with employer and alumni partners to forge connections between the skills they teach and those skills’ applicability to various careers and industries.

Over the course of the semester, participating faculty will update their course syllabus to illustrate how it maps with the National Association of Colleges and Employers’ (NACE) workplace competencies. They will also provide examples of course activities that allow students the chance to practice transferable skills.

Additionally, the program has been expanded to include non-faculty who are involved in co-curricular activities. They are also given the opportunity to participate in the Skill Infusion Program, where they will submit updated job descriptions for on-campus student jobs within their department, and show how the skills practiced map with NACE competencies. Ideally, NACE competencies will be more integrated into student organizations, campus events, and student employment opportunities. 

Impact:

This program helps faculty build courses that will better help students learn real-life skills that are applicable to the workplace and relevant to employers. College students who take courses from participating faculty should be better prepared to eventually leave college and transition to the workforce.
