Intel’s Investment in Semiconductor Educational Programs

Program Overview: 

In 2022, Intel broke ground on two leading-edge semiconductor manufacturing facilities in New Albany, Ohio. The project is expected to create 3,000 Intel jobs and 7,000 construction jobs, while helping establish Ohio as a growing hub for semiconductor manufacturing and innovation. 

To help build the workforce needed to support this investment, Intel launched the Semiconductor Education and Research Program (SERP) in Ohio, committing $50 million to higher education institutions across the state. The program is designed to strengthen semiconductor-related education, research, and workforce development opportunities for students pursuing careers in advanced manufacturing and technology. 

The first $17.7 million was awarded over a three-year period to support eight collaborative SERP proposals involving more than 80 Ohio colleges and universities. Funding has helped institutions expand semiconductor-focused coursework and training through faculty development, curriculum creation, laboratory equipment, hands-on learning experiences, and research opportunities. Programs emphasize critical industry skills, including microelectronics, robotics, automation, and semiconductor fabrication. 

Ohio’s growing semiconductor ecosystem will require a diverse talent pipeline. While approximately 30% of future semiconductor jobs are expected to require four-year or advanced degrees, many technical roles will be accessible through two-year degree programs and industry-focused credentials. As a result, participating institutions are developing pathways that prepare students for a broad range of careers across the semiconductor and advanced manufacturing sectors. 

Impact: 

Intel’s investment is helping Ohio institutions expand existing programs and create new educational pathways aligned with industry needs. By strengthening semiconductor education capacity across the state, the program is preparing students for opportunities in one of the nation’s fastest-growing advanced technology sectors. 

The benefits extend beyond the semiconductor industry. According to faculty participating in SERP-funded initiatives, many of the technical and problem-solving skills students gain are transferable across advanced manufacturing fields, improving long-term career opportunities and workforce resilience. 

Several institutions have already introduced new programs and credentials to meet employer demand.
