Oregon’s Diploma Requirements for Personal Financial Education

Program Description:  

The state of Oregon requires all graduating high school students to complete a 0.5 credit in Personal Financial Education since the passage of Senate Bill 3 in 2023. School districts are required to ensure students understand the impact of learning about personal finance on their academic journey and integrate the relevant coursework into each student’s educational plan. School districts can also integrate the 0.5 credit coursework into other academic areas, such as general math, to help students balance graduation requirements alongside their individual plans for after graduation.  

Impact:  

The requirement is meant to provide an equal footing for all students related to personal finance, future planning, and access to skills needed to navigate difficult systems such as financial aid. The course requirement helps students tackle the complexities of the ever-changing financial world and digital economy. The course is meant to provide four major areas of support to students:  

• Provide students opportunities to acquire a variety of real-world skills 

• Enable students to focus on the practical application of financial literacy to future aspirations 

• Establish dedicated time for all students to receive support in developing interview skills and resumes, applying for financial aid, and completing employment and/or college applications 

• Promote students’ successful transition to career, college, and life after K-12 education

Population Served:  

All graduating high school students in the state of Oregon are required to complete the course.
