New Jersey Financial Aid Application Graduation Requirement

Program Description:  

In New Jersey, all public school students must complete either the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) or the New Jersey Alternative Financial Aid Application, or be exempted from the requirement, as a prerequisite to receiving a high school diploma. This requirement applies to the graduating classes of 2025, 2026, and 2027. Once students complete the FAFSA, not only will they be eligible for graduation, but they will also be considered for federal and state financial aid, including Pell Grants, work-study, and student loans. Colleges and universities may also use FAFSA information to award their own institutional aid.

Impact:  

Research shows that students who complete the FAFSA are more likely to go to college, as it serves as an entry point into their college journey, allowing them to see the financial support that is available to them. When students have access to financial aid, they are more likely to complete college and achieve success in their career and economic goals. 

Population Served:  

All graduating public school students in the graduating classes of 2025, 2026, and 2027 within the state of New Jersey, regardless of IEP status, must satisfy the FAFSA requirement to graduate.
