Research focuses on the discovery of comets and near-Earth asteroids and the results of impact upon the planets by extraterrestrial bodies. She has discovered 32 comets and more than 800 asteroids, of which more than 41 are Earth approachers. Together with her late husband Eugene Shoemaker, more than 20 impact craters and structures in Australia were either discovered or verified by mapping gravity and magnetic studies, and the finding of shattercones, impact hazard faced by Earth and works with television groups producing educational documentaries.
