RG XXI-A: Projects and Programs. Early Records

ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION

Historical Note

A precursor to the Academy’s modern-day program areas and projects, specially-appointed committees conducted a variety of activities in the early years of the institution. These activities included, but were not limited to: investigating new discoveries and inventions, conducting scientific studies, developing the Academy’s collections, examining membership qualifications, amending organizational statutes and regulations, and developing new committees. These committees were ad hoc and many lasted only a year or two, just long enough to carry out its mandate of investigating a particular claim or determining the best method of achieving a particular goal, etc. The committee members were appointed at Stated Meetings and submitted their reports at subsequent meetings.

During the twentieth century and continuing to the present, project work represents a major focus of the Academy, although the focus has shifted primarily away from research to policy studies. Full descriptions of current work is available on the Academy website: https://www.amacad.org/our-work

In addition to its own work, in 1881 the Academy was asked by the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association to judge its annual contest for the invention that “most benefits human welfare,” given as the Grand Gold Medal.[1]

[1] See the report of the committee in Proceedings of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Vol. 17 (Jun., 1881 - Jun., 1882), on pp. 389-393: http://www.jstor.org/stable/25138656.

Scope and Content

As part of the larger record group for Academy Projects and Programs, this series contains the records of early special committees of the Academy dating from 1784 to 1913. The series is divided into two subseries: Special Committees, 1784-1913, and Grand Gold Medal, 1881. The first subseries consists primarily of special committee reports with some correspondence and other supplemental documentation. The records are arranged chronologically by the tenure of the committee.

The second subseries contains applications for the Grand Gold Medal competition of 1881. A committee of seven Fellows was established in June 1881 by the Academy to consider the award of the Grand Gold Medal, by the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanic Association. However, records for the winning entry—a testing machine designed by Albert Everett—are not included among the applications.

A catalog of the exhibitions can be found at https://books.google.com/books?id=Ag0AAAAAMAAJ.
