Book Launch and Signing: The Privileged Poor
Please join us to celebrate the launch of Anthony Jack’s first book, The Privileged Poor: How Elite Colleges are Failing Disadvantaged Students.
Jack is a junior fellow at the Harvard Society of Fellows and assistant professor of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education whose research and writing, as well as biographical experiences as a first-generation college student, have been featured in The New York Times, The Atlantic, The National Review, NPR and other outlets. His scholarship appears in the Du Bois Review, Sociological Forum, and Sociology of Education and has earned awards from the American Sociological Association, Eastern Sociological Society, and the Society for the Study of Social Problems.
Bridget Terry Long, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and Danielle Allen, James Bryant Conant University Professor and Director of the Edmond J. Safra Center for Ethics at Harvard will join us for this event exploring the experiences of lower-income undergraduates at the country’s top colleges and how campus cultures and policies can better support these students.
Getting in is only half the battle.
The Privileged Poor reveals how—and why—disadvantaged students struggle at elite colleges, and explains what schools can do differently if these students are to thrive.
Reception and book signing to follow.
