RG XVIII: Daedalus, "Doing Better and Feeling Worse: Health in the United States" (Vol. 106, no. 1, Winter 1977)

Historical Note

Daedalus is the quarterly journal of the American Academy. The 1977 Winter issue of Daedalus, "Doing Better and Feeling Worse: Health in the United States" (vol. 106, no. 1), deals with the state of American healthcare from a variety of perspectives, including medical education, health policy, technology, and mental health, among others. It was organized by Academy Editor Stephen R. Graubard, who worked with 20 authors to produce 18 articles. John H. Knowles, president of the Rockefeller Foundation, served as the guest editor and a contributing author for the issue.

Many of the essays included in the issue originated as drafts for the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans’ health care group, which was led by Knowles and chartered by CCCA Chairman Nelson Rockefeller. In addition, a planning conference for the issue was organized by Graubard and Managing Editor Geno A. Ballotti. The conference, titled “American Medical Culture Today,” was held April 11-12, 1974, at the Harvard Faculty Club.

Funding was provided by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Rockefeller Foundation.

Scope and Content

This record group contains material created by the Academy’s Editorial Office, specifically Stephen R. Graubard and Geno A. Ballotti, pertaining to the 1977 Winter Daedalus issue “Doing Better and Feeling Worse: Health in the United States” (vol. 106, no. 1), and date from 1970-1977, with bulk 1973-1977.

A large portion of the records are correspondence and editorial papers sent between Graubard, Ballotti, Knowles, and contributing authors, especially regarding participation in the 1974 “American Medical Culture Today” planning conference and manuscript drafts. The records also include transcripts from the first session of the conference. This record group does not contain material related to the Commission on Critical Choices for Americans’ health care group.

Arrangement

Processing for this series utilized “More Product, Less Process” (MPLP) principles: thus, minimal preservation steps were taken and folder titles listed in the finding aid are as they appeared on the original folders. Where lacking, folder titles and dates have been ascribed in brackets. Records were kept in their original chronological or alphabetical order where possible, and interfiled where appropriate.

This series is divided into two Subseries: Subseries 1: American Medical Culture Today Conference, 1970-1974, and Subseries 2: Publication, 1975-1977.

Subseries 1: American Medical Culture Today Conference, 1970-1974 is further divided into two Sub-subseries: Sub-subseries 1.1: Participant Correspondence, 1973-1974, with author files arranged generally alphabetically in their original order; and Sub-subseries 1.2: Conference Planning and Transcripts, 1970-1974, arranged generally chronologically.
