RG XVIII: Daedalus, "Books, Bricks, and Bytes" (Vol. 125, no. 4, Fall 1996)
Historical Note
The records in this collection relate to the 1996 Fall issue of Daedalus, "Books, Bricks, and Bytes" (Vol. 125, No. 4). Daedalus is the academic journal published by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. This issue specifically is on the topic of Library Science, and was inspired by two former presidents of the New York Public Library, Timothy Healy and Paul Leclerc, and coincides with the anticipation of the New York Public Library’s centennial celebration. It was organized by the Editor of the Academy, Stephen R. Graubard. Graubard worked with 20 authors to compile the 19 papers for the issue, that address current issues and topics within the library community, including emerging technologies, as well as international librarianship.
A planning conference was held on October 20-21, 1994, where Graubard and his assembled list of authors met to discuss the topics and breadth of the issue. The editor and many of the authors also participated in The Future of America’s Libraries Conference, April 24-29, 1996, to further the discussion of the topics already set to appear in the Daedalus issue.
Funding was provided by the New York Public Library and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
