Academy Fellows Neal Lane, Tom Leighton, David Clark, Robert Post, Linda Greenhouse, Gerald Rosenfeld, Michael Kremer, Jerrold Meinwald, and Patricia Meyer Spacksprovided new members with an overview of ongoing Academy programs in science and global security; social policy and American institutions; education; and humanities and culture.

The class of 2004 includes 177 Fellows and 24 Foreign Honorary Members chosen from the fields of scholarship, business, the arts, and public affairs. The new members are elected by their peers through a rigorous selection process. This year's new class includes Henry Samueli, cofounder, chairman, and chief technical officer of Broadcom Corporation; Lucian Freud, visual artist; Leonore Annenberg, president of the Annenberg Foundation; Richard C. Holbrooke, vice chairman of Perseus LLC and former U.S. ambassador to Germany and to the United Nations; John Corigliano, composer; Ann Beattie, novelist and short story writer; Timothy E. Wirth, president of the United Nations Foundation; and Guillermo Jaim Etcheverry, president of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Founded in 1780 by John Adams and other scholar-patriots, the Academy's mission is "to cultivate every art and science which may tend to advance the interest, honor, dignity, and happiness of a free, independent, and virtuous people." The Academy has elected as Fellows and Foreign Honorary Members the finest minds and most influential leaders from each generation, including George Washington and Ben Franklin in the eighteenth century, Daniel Webster and Ralph Waldo Emerson in the nineteenth, and Albert Einstein and Winston Churchill in the twentieth. Its current membership of over 3,900 Fellows and 600 Foreign Honorary Members includes more than 150 Nobel laureates and 50 Pulitzer Prize winners. Drawing on the wide-ranging expertise of its membership, the American Academy conducts thoughtful, innovative, non-partisan studies on international security, American institutions, education, and the humanities.
