This election season has some fearing that American democracy is in deep peril, as candidates and voters navigate a series of overlapping crises around public health, economic and racial inequality, political polarization, and voter suppression. To understand what’s next, the Chicago Humanities Festival convened some of the authors behind Our Common Purpose: Reinventing American Democracy for the 21st Century, a recent report from the American Academy of Arts & Sciences.

Leading the discussion was cochair of the Academy's Commission on the Practice of Democratic Citizenship Eric Liu and Commission members Pete Peterson and Hahrie Han. This panel was moderated by Democracy Program Director at the Joyce Foundation Carrie L. Davis.
