Habib is leading South Africa's modernization of its academic environment, focusing on meeting the needs of indigenous South Africans and strengthening the capacities of indigenous faculty. Now serving as Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Witwatersrand, he previously was Deputy Vice-Chancellor at Johannesburg University and Executive Director of South Africa's prestigious Human Sciences Research Council. Earlier, he was professor of development studies at the University of KwaZulu-Natal and research director of its Centre for Civil Society. He played a critical role in merging several important tertiary institutions into what is now Johannesburg University and in encouraging faculty to increase their research output. At Witwatersrand, he is attempting to transform how it recruits African faculty and students.
