Professor of Astrophysical Sciences. Produced the standard models for brown dwarf stars and gas giant planets and contributed fundamentally to understanding of core-collapse supernova explosions. Former Chair of the Board on Physics and Astronomy (BPA) of the National Research Council; BPA Liaison to the 2010 Decadal Survey of Astronomy; member, Board of Trustees of the Aspen Center for Physics. Chaired numerous NASA Advisory and Roadmapping committees; former chair of the Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics (KITP) Advisory Board.
