Research involves the discovery and analysis of fossil primates, including humans. Major discoveries in Africa include the most complete Homo erectus skeleton ever, new fossils of two early species of Australopithecus, and hundreds of fossils of the early anthropoid ape Proconsul. He has been involved in bringing new analytical techniques to bear on problems of human evolution, including the use of scanning electron microscopy to study ancient diets and high resolution computed tomography to study details of anatomy of fossil primates.
