Alan R. Saltiel

Alan R. Saltiel is a Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Pharmacology, the Maryam Ahmadian Endowed Chair in Metabolic Health, and Director of the Institute for Diabetes and Metabolic Health at the University of California, San Diego. His research focuses on the molecular mechanisms of insulin action and their role in metabolic diseases, including obesity and diabetes. With over 300 publications and 19 patents, Saltiel has significantly advanced our understanding of metabolic regulation and has contributed to the development of drugs for diabetes and cancer.

Saltiel is also the director of the UCSD-UCLA Diabetes Research Center (DRC). The DRC is dedicated to fostering research in the prevention and treatment of diabetes and metabolic diseases and their complications, and to improving the lives of patients suffering from these devastating disorders. To advance these goals, Saltiel leads an integrated approach to research activities across the two universities and related institutions so that the Center can serve as a hub for other research enterprises in the Southern California area and beyond. The DRC strives to coordinate the diabetes research efforts, and to promote cross-disciplinary collaborations and generate new diabetes-related programs by expanding opportunities for regional interactions and scientific exchange.
