Founder and Director Jodrell Bank Observatory Before World War II, I worked on cosmic rays with P.M.S. Blackett in Manchester. From 1939-1945, I was a member of the TRE team developing centimetric radar, firstly for AI (Air Inception) then from December 1941 in charge of the centimetre H(2)S blind bombing system and ASV. After the war, I returned to Manchester and founded the Jodrell Bank Observatory, constructing the 250 ft. steerable radio telescope (now the Lovell Telescope) carrying out various astronomical researches, initially on the radio detection of meteors and latterly on the radio emission from red dwarf stars.
