Research involves the application of electrochemical methods to chemical problems. He invented the scanning electrochemical microscope, applied it to the study of chemical reactions and used it to trap and detect single molecules. He has also worked on electrogenerated chemiluminescence, photoelectrochemistry at semiconductors and integrated chemical systems.
