Renowned author, psychiatrist, professor, social critic, lecturer, and founder of the innovative Media Center at Harvard University's Judge Baker Children's Center. Organized medical care for the marches throughout the South during the civil rights movement, worked toward desegregating medical facilities in the South in the 1960s, and led in the community health center movement. Since joining Harvard Medical School in 1969, had a significant impact on the growing diversity of the medical profession. Advised the entertainment industry for over 30 years, encouraging it to convey important lessons about diversity and self-image to children and adults of all races and ethnicities. Served as consultant to the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and adviser to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of State, and White House for several national conferences. Served as adviser for numerous television station and film and book projects, including PBS programs such as NOVA. His writings have prompted experts in psychiatry to rethink existing theories of racism.
