Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts ~Professor of Economics. Contributions to public finance and health economics. Most important work is in measuring the extent of adverse selection in different health-related markets, including annuity markets and individual health insurance markets. Investigated the implications of public insurance programs such as Medicare on health care utilization, technology choices, and health care outcomes. Known for work on how various government programs affect the types of drugs that are developed and on how hospitals make technology and capacity-utilization choices. Co-director, Public Economics Program; Research Associate, National Bureau of Economic Research; and Co-editor, Journal of Public Economics. Named a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader (2011). Received the John Bates Clark Medal (2012), the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (2009), and the Elaine Bennett Research Prize (2008).~~
