New York, New York~Pianist, Conductor, and Composer. Versatile musician and winner of four Academy Awards and ten Grammy Awards. Career flourished in the late 1950s and early 1960s with musical hits that he adapted from the stage for films, and with original scores he composed and conducted for other musicals and dramas. Works were included in the films Kiss Me Kate (1953), Kismet (1955), Pal Joey (1957), Gigi (1958), Porgy and Bess (1959), and Paint Your Wagon (1969). Served as Principal Conductor of the Houston Symphony, London Symphony, Pittsburgh Symphony, and Royal Philharmonic orchestras. Has composed a symphony, concertos, and the operas A Streetcar Named Desire (1998) and Brief Encounter (2009), as well as popular songs. Performed with his own jazz combo and the Jazz at the Philharmonic All-Stars. Honored with a knighthood in 1996.~~~
