President of NYU. Working in field of molecular recognition, applies organic chemistry to problems at interface of chemistry and biology. Early work focused on controlling intermolecular interactions through hydrogen bonding groups. Contributions include first mimics of alpha-helix structure and function, seminal artificial receptors and catalysts, and new approaches to protein modulators. Developed range of molecules that bind selectively to biological targets and influence cellular processes in vivo. Implications for understanding cellular processes and treating cancer and parasitic diseases. Editorial boards include Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Molecular Recognition. Former Provost of Yale University, former Vice Chancellor of Oxford, appointed President of NYU in 2016.
