Andrew Orr-Ewing is the Leverhulme Chair of Physical Chemistry at the University of Bristol. His research interests include atmospheric chemistry, photochemistry and photocatalysis, ultrafast chemical dynamics in solution, and the optical and photochemical properties of aerosol microdroplets. This research is experimentally led, and applies a range of advanced spectroscopy and scattering techniques using femtosecond lasers, X-ray free electron lasers, and ultrafast electron diffraction.

His research group uses several different types of lasers (including nanosecond and femtosecond pulsed lasers, and cw lasers) to study chemical reactivity, atmospheric chemistry, methods of trace gas detection, optical properties of aerosol particles, and molecular spectroscopy and photochemistry. They use ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy to study chemical and photochemical reaction dynamics in liquids, and cavity enhanced spectroscopy methods for a variety of applications in atmospheric chemistry and aerosol science.

He collaborates closely with theoretical chemists and atmospheric chemistry modellers. Andrew is an Executive Editor of the Journal of Physical Chemistry A, published by the American Chemical Society.
