Research focuses now on seventeenth-and eighteenth-century literature, history and politics. Previously she has written on ancient rhetoric, Virgil and his reception in Europe, censorship, the Aesopian fable, Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, Marvell. Topics that recur in her work are individualism, dissent, the evolution of rights and civil liberties, debates within the field of historiography, and the work that words do in the world.
