Leading scholar on school organization and teaching, including statistical methods in the social sciences, and expert on educational policy and practice. Hierarchical Linear Models: Applications and Data Analysis Methods (1992) changed how researchers and many social scientists model their data. Catholic Schools and the Common Good (1983) generated new ideas about schools as communities. Launched prototype for how universities and public school systems can collaborate to improve policy; many other cities replicated this model. Created the Chicago Center for Urban School Improvement, an organization on school reform. Recipient, Distinguished Career Contributions of the American Educational Research Association, and Thomas Fordham Foundation's Prize for Distinguished Contributions to Education and Scholarship. Books include Hierarchical Linear Models: Applications and Data Analysis Methods (2001), and Trust In Schools: A Core Resource For Improvement (2004) and Organizing Schools for Improvement (2010).
