Engineering and Applied Science Division, and Theodore von Karman Professor of Aeronautics and Professor of Mechanical Engineering. Research has added to understanding, deformation and failure in engineering materials. Developed the coherent gradient sensing (CGS) method of experimentally observing highly dynamic rate fracture of structural materials, deformation of silicon wafers in semiconductor fabrication, and laboratory scale earthquake propagation experiments. For pioneering contributions to the field of fracture and failure mechanics of microelectronic, engineering and geological materials and structures, spanning a wide range of length scales and for visionary leadership promoting interdisciplinary research and education in mechanical engineering.
