Karlin's research focused on the organization of cellular signaling and its representation in mathematical models, including a model of the myogenic response of arterial smooth muscle. The disparate and opposing roles of calcium ions in this process are based on the channeling of signaling by proximity in microdomains of signal transmitters and receivers. This interest stemmed from his decades of work on the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors and on potassium channels.
