Elected President of the American Historical Association in 2007, one of the highest honors of the historical profession. Considered the ranking historian of Brazil, among the best historians of Latin America, and a pioneer in Latin American women's history. Scholarship on Brazilian labor, economy, gender, and race, as well as her stature in the profession and her reputation as a teacher and mentor, will make her an important and vital addition to the Academy. At SUNY-Stony Brook, the University of Maryland, and now at NYU, she built graduate programs in Latin American history of national renown. Served as the chief editor of the flagship Latin American history journal, Hispanic American Historical Review. Authored two books - on diverse topics: the economic development of the Amazon and industrialism in São Paulo and published dozens of journal and book articles on diverse topics, including comparative US-Latin American history.
