He is President and Chief Executive Officer of the J. Paul Getty Trust. He is a member of the Executive Committee of Los Angeles' KCET Public Television Station and a member of the Board of Trustees for Princeton University, and a director of Kaufman and Broad Home Corporation. After teaching at UC Berkeley and serving as Clark Kerr's assistant on the Carnegie Commission on the Future of Higher Education, he worked as Academic Vice President of the University of Illinois system, as Chancellor of the University of Houston, as president of a Fortune 200 corporation, and as Chancellor of the California State University system.
