Philosopher whose current research focuses on self-consciousness and self-reference, drawing on both the continental and the analytical traditions that range from Kant to contemporary philosophy. Authored Kant and the Capacity to Judge (French edition, 1993; expanded English edition, 1998). Describes Kant's empirical concepts and their relation to sensibility-and in particular Kant's Metaphysical Deduction section of Critique of Pure Reason (1781). Also published a book of essays Kant on the Human Standpoint (2005) and Hegel's Critique of Metaphysics (2007). Co-edited Kant and the Early Moderns (2008), and wrote numerous articles on the history of philosophy and philosophy of mind. Trained at the Ecole Normale Superieure in Paris, the University of Paris-Sorbonne, and Princeton University. Held positions in French Universities for many years before joining the philosophy department at Princeton, and then NYU.
