Made pioneering and fundamental contributions in applied and computational mathematics with applications in science, engineering and industry. Some of his most important contributions include (1) Seminal work with Majda on absorbing boundary conditions which made significant impacts in practical applications such as geophysics, seismology and petroleum industry; (2) Development and analysis of shock capturing methods for nonlinear hyperbolic conservation law. These numerical methods have been widely used in computational fluid dynamics and aerospace industry; (3) Multiscale modeling and numerical homogenization.
